Woodsville NH-JAG - Week #1

AMC Crew Leaders and Woodsville NH-JAG students 2012
July 30th was the first day working with Woodsville High School's NH-JAG students on trails. Our AMC Trail Crew Leaders, Mike and Alana, will be working on trail maintenance and reconstruction projects with Woodsville students for the next three weeks on the Reel Brook Trail in the White Mountain National Forest.
Tools and Safety Talk starts the day

Our first day was filled with program overviews, orientations, review of policies and expectations, and focusing on safety. We headed out on the trail to discuss trail management, view a variety of trail structures, and walk over the trail project areas for the next three weeks. The crew will start by brushing out overgrown trail and cleaning drainages. Once that is complete they will be constructing multiple step rock staircases, rock waterbars, rock stepping stones, and installing lots of new drainage ditches!

Justin P. WMNF talks with the crew
Joining us for this orientation day was Justin Preisendorfer of the White Mountain National Forest. Justin was able to share his knowledge and experience of recreation and Wilderness management with the students while out on the Reel Brook Trail. Justin was sure to emphasize the importance of the work these students will be doing over the next several weeks.

After day one, things are off to a great start working with the Woodsville NH-JAG students. From here on out the students will be getting to work repairing and reconstructing the trail, learning more about conservation and recreation management, and having a great time.
